ABOUT

North State Hulling was founded in 1968 by a group of growers looking to eliminate the personal expense and maintenance of their own hulling operations and combine to provide the best quality hulling and shelling in the area.

Location

After more than 50 years operating in Chico, CA, North State Hulling Cooperative outgrew its Miller Avenue facility. While located on the urban fringe of Chico, the noise, dust and truck traffic generated during harvest months adversely impacted the surrounding neighborhood. The hulling & shelling lines were over 40-years old; the electric system was outdated. And, with limited capacity at the Miller Ave. site, North State was only able to hull and shell half its Members’ almond acres.

After unanimous decision by the board in 2018 the Cooperative acquired 477 acres on Highway 32 near Hamilton City, CA. The huller/sheller sits on a 50-acre industrial zoned parcel with space for future expansion. Over 50 acres are devoted to stockpile storage on well-drained soil extending North State’s harvest season. Additional acreage will be developed and maintained to improve storage space and restore the natural creek onsite. The plant opened for its first season in 2020, and continues to expand and improve with each passing year.
